Truck Bed Cover

Has anybody ever heard of a truck bed cover that can be used with a fifth wheel hitch and fifth wheel attached? It sure would be nice to utilize the truck bed for (dry)storage when towing.

I'm thinking Howard and Linda had one made for their truck.Check back to some of their original info pages from when they first started.

We have a roll up bed cover that is of course open when we tow, but we keep 3 large snap lidded plastic containers across the back near the cab and have never had any problems with water or dust getting in. One of them contains our winter clothing, the other 2 are for tools and miscellaneous things.

In general, the truck bed is a great storage place. We also keep the folding ladder, grill, propane tank, compressor, trailer jacks and bird feeding poles and feed back there.

Yes Howard and Linda have one.

I do like Fred does... roll the cover back plus use an across the bed toolbox and plastic containers in the bed along with ladder, flag pole, small propane tank, wheel chocks & blocks.

At one time there was a company that made fiberglass inserts to cover the whole bed except the hitch. The insert V'd down behind the hitch. There were compartments with lids across the front, down the sides and across the rear for storage of items. I always thought these were great, I see them advertised on e-bay/craigslist once in a while. Of course they are for older P/U beds but I'm guessing can be modified to fit a newer truck.

I saw a guy that had taken a solid bed cover, cut a oversized hole in it for the trailer pin box to fit through and then had a nylon cloth boot made that snapped on the outside of the cover and around the pin box with elastic ribs and extra material to allow the pin box to turn. He carried all of his swapmeet merchandise in the pickup bed. He said as long as the 5th wheel was hooked his stuff was secure and dry. He had a hard patch that locked in place to cover the hole in the bed cover when he was unhitched. It's tough enough trying to hitch up with the whole hitch exposed, I'd hate to have to work through a hole to lock/ unlock the pin and hook up brake cable...etc. let alone line up the hitch and king pin.

Here is a link to one of our Journal entries that describes the truck bed cover we had custom designed.

Truck Bed Cover

It's not perfect, but it has been a good solution for us.  smile

Hi! aside from the custom cover mentioned in the journal, are there other recommendations you guys can give for tonneau cover? I think I have no time making one so I would just like to buy one for my truck. better if you guys can give me links to existing threads about it.

They are available. We ordered one and my husband installed in one evening. It rolls up to open for towing. Closes and covers the hitch when not towing.

We have a Curt hitch and it fits under the closed cover. we know someone who has a Reese and its handle sits to hi and doesn't fit under.

The brand we have is a Roll N Lock.

Closing this thread since it is a 2009 thread that had been idle.  Please begin a new thread so that folks aren't reading through old, out-of-date information.  Thanks.
